Lauri & Naoto

Lauri Hyvärinen and Naoto Yamagishi

Naoto Yamagishi – drums (Japan)
Lauri Hyvärinen – electric guitar (Finland)

The Japanese-Finnish duo explores music free from formal rules. Balancing instinct and structure, density and silence, the artists have maintained an ongoing dialogue since 2014, bringing together saturated, rough-edged guitar sounds and deep, friction-based percussion. They have performed in Japan, France, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Germany.

Their releases include Live at Hošek (Bokashi Records, 2025), Love Hotel Blues with Sergio Castrillón (Yabuki Records, 2021) and Usva with Jone Takamäki (Rypistellyt levyt, 2016).

Lauri Hyvärinen is a guitarist and improviser born in Helsinki in 1986. Using the guitar as his primary sound source, he combines improvisation with compositional and minimalist structures. He has recorded for Dinzu Artefacts, NUNC and Intonema, and performed in Europe, South Korea, Japan and the USA, including at Wien Modern, Cafe Oto and Rhizome. His collaborators include Félicie Bazelaire, Taku Sugimoto, Angharad Davies and Seijiro Murayama. He is a member of Sähkökitarakvartetti.

Naoto Yamagishi is a drummer seeking music as it existed before the concept was formally defined. He draws on the rhythms, sounds and spaces of everyday life. He works with musicians, dancers, poets, photographers, painters, calligraphers and artists from other disciplines, and creates music for dance performances and video works. His recordings have been released by Relative Pitch, Meenna, Ftarri and OTOOTO. His collaborators include Tetuzi Akiyama, Isabelle Duthoit, Joachim Badenhorst and Keiko Higuchi.
