AJAKS

AJAKS: Marek Pospieszalski, Qba Janicki and Max Mucha

Marek Pospieszalski – saxophone (Poland)
Qba Janicki – drums (Poland)
Max Mucha – double bass, bass guitar (Poland)

AJAKS grows out of many years of shared stage experience between Marek Pospieszalski, Qba Janicki and Max Mucha. Moving effortlessly between different sonic worlds, the musicians create vital, sincere and expressive music founded on close understanding and a personal connection.

Fatherhood emerged at a time when becoming fathers had transformed the lives of all three musicians. Rather than an autobiographical statement, they offer focused music, economical in its gestures, shaped by tenderness, tension and attentive listening. Acoustic resonance, repetition and the development of motifs become a space for organic communication.

Beneath the music’s calm surface lie tensions between routine and transcendence, intimacy and responsibility. AJAKS leaves room for silence and treats sound as a form of presence. Maturity does not diminish intensity, but gives it a new dimension.

Marek Pospieszalski is a saxophonist, clarinettist, flautist, composer and arranger, and a graduate of the Academy of Music in Kraków. His projects include solo work, the duo Malediwy with Qba Janicki and his own octet. The octet’s albums devoted to twentieth-century Polish composers were released by Clean Feed and earned recognition in the Jazz Top poll. He received the 2022 Grand Prix Jazz Melomani awards for Musician of the Year and Album of the Year.

Qba Janicki is a drummer who emerged from the creative community around the Mózg club. His collaborators include Roscoe Mitchell, Toshinori Kondo, Peter Brötzmann, Mats Gustafsson and Grischa Lichtenberger. He was a member of the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet for more than a decade. He also works with Malediwy, T’ien Lai and Marek Pospieszalski’s octet, creates music for theatre and helps organise cultural projects.

Max Mucha is a double bassist and bass guitarist who studied with Greg Cohen at Jazz Institut Berlin and at the Academy of Music in Katowice. His collaborators include Christian Scott, whose quintet he toured with worldwide. He performs with Marcin Masecki’s trio, Kuba Więcek’s Hoshii and Marek Pospieszalski’s octet. His appearances include Montreux Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Jazz Baltica and London Jazz Fest.

Jellyspace “Beyond the Five Notes”

Jellyspace: Mikołaj Trzaska, Peter Ole Jørgensen and Rafał Mazur

Mikołaj Trzaska – saxophones (Poland)
Peter Ole Jørgensen – drums (Denmark)
Rafał Mazur – acoustic bass guitar (Poland)
Marek Pospieszalski – tenor saxophone (Poland)
Karolina Kazoń – voice

Jellyspace is the trio of Mikołaj Trzaska, Rafał Mazur and Peter Ole Jørgensen, whose live album was released by Not Two Records. Their music is charged with the energy of free jazz improvisation: saxophone, acoustic bass guitar and drums build an intense, increasingly dense sound in which the interaction between the artists is paramount.

The Jellyspace trio will be joined by Marek Pospieszalski, making his second appearance on the Manggha Museum stage that evening, and actress Karolina Kazoń, who will perform a philosophical text by Rafał Mazur accompanied by the improvising musicians. The performance draws inspiration from the Daoist concept of music “beyond the five notes”, moving beyond patterns and rules to become a path towards harmony with the world.
