10th Anniversary of the Blue Shroud Band: “The Blue Shroud” – Artistic residency at the 19th KJJ, Day 5
This year’s Krakow Jazz Autumn (KJJ) will come full circle with the participation of the distinguished guest and artist, Barry Guy. He is a remarkable figure who seamlessly bridges the worlds of early and baroque music with improvisation and jazz big bands. Guy is well-known to our festival audience for his work with the Barry Guy New Orchestra and the London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Many KJJ regulars will recall the 9th edition, where Blue Shroud Band’s current lineup was first formed. This year, we celebrate a decade of the band’s artistic activity.
Performers will include: Barry Guy // Savina Yannatou // Agusti Fernandez // Ben Dwyer // Percy Pursglove // Maya Homburger // Fanny Paccoud // Marc Unternährer // Torben Snekkestad // Michael Niesemann // Per Texas Johansson // Julius Gabriel // Lucas Niggli // Ramon Lopez // and for the first time at KJJ, Jordina Millà.
“The Blue Shroud”
In 2014, during the 9th edition of KJJ, Guy and his outstanding musicians presented a monumental and powerful work. This composition was commissioned by the Krakow Jazz Autumn and was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica,” which memorializes the bombing of the Basque town. Guy also connected this piece to events from 2003 when U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed the public at the UN regarding the invasion of Iraq, leading to the decision to cover the tapestry reproduction of “Guernica” with a blue curtain. Thus, “The Blue Shroud” was born, along with music that not only touches on political themes but also explores issues related to the human condition, demonstrating the resilience of the human spirit against tyranny. This concert became one of the most significant performances in the festival’s history, and this year the piece will be presented again as part of the fifth evening of the super ensemble residency.
