KJJ Afterparty: Saagara

Wacław Zimpel – a musical chameleon – has been on a journey with classical Indian music since 2012, inspiring the creation of Saagara (Sanskrit for “ocean”). Joining Zimpel are the extraordinary percussionists Giridhar Udupa, Aggu Baba, Thavil Raja, and violinist Mysore N. Karthik. Together, they have released two critically acclaimed albums: the first, directly rooted in the forms of Carnatic music, and the second, blending in electronic influences with hypnotic beats and ambient layers. Their third album, released in October 2024 under Tak: Til Glitterbeat, opens a new chapter in Saagara’s story, shaped by Zimpel’s creative explorations over recent years. He has ventured deeply into electronic music production from jazz, collaborating with influential artists like James Holden and Sam Shackleton. These experiences and new tools have enabled him to bring Saagara into a fresh realm, where Indian rhythms pulse amidst synths, samplers, organs, and transformed acoustic instruments. Audiences in Krakow will experience this new sound just after its album debut.
